The 2018 Preservation Sacramento Historic Home Tour took place on September 16th, 2018 in the Capitol Mansions Historic District neighborhood.
Named for its large stately structures, Capitol Mansion Historic District is bounded by 22nd and 27th streets, Kayak Alley (between Capitol and L Street), and Matsui Alley (between Capitol Avenue and N Street). This historic district includes Colonial Revival, Queen Anne, Prairie Bungalow and Classical Four-Square styles of architecture.
The tour showcased six distinctive and stately homes. Tour-goers saw intricate woodworking, built-in cabinets, period gas lighting fixtures, grand staircases, restored wood paneling, curved glass windows, high ceilings and spacious front porches.
While all the homes had been originally built as single-family residences, five had commercial incarnations — two boarding houses, two bed and breakfast establishments and an office building. With considerable work and painstaking care by both owners and talented crafts people, the homes have now been restored to single-family residences. as they were originally intended to be.
The tour was hosted by Preservation Sacramento, a group dedicated to educating the public about the value of these historic Sacramento homes and neighborhoods.
