COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Removed unused bus stops and reclaimed parking spaces

Increased the visibility and safety of the Capitol Avenue traffic circle

Partnered with neighborhood churches to build community

In January 2018, the association filed a request with Sacramento Regional Transit to eliminate five unused bus stops along Capitol Avenue and return the space to public. As a result, our neighborhood has cleared the sidewalk of an unnecessary covered bench and has recovered 16 much-needed parking spaces for our residents and visitors.

Members of the Friends of Capitol Mansions Neighborhood Association volunteer their time (and candy) to support First Baptist Church of Sacramento celebrate a safe and happy Halloween for children in the neighborhood. Each year, the streets surrounding the church are blocked off and fun activities, from kids games to cake walks, are provided for children of all ages.

Increased the visibility and safety of the Capitol Avenue traffic circle

Since the installation of the traffic circle at 25th Street and Capitol Avenue, a number of destructive collisions have occurred between reckless or drunk drivers and parked vehicles. Representatives from the Association met with the City to identify possible solutions for this unsafe intersection. As a result, measures were implemented to increase visibility and slow drivers. Incidents have dramatically decreased since these measures have been adopted.

"Guerrilla" Gardening and beautification along Capitol Avenue

Engaged as participants in the City's Urban Forest Master Plan sessions

One of the missions of FoCM is to lift our neighborhood through beautification and upkeep. In that spirit, members of the Association have adopted neglected corners and center traffic medians along Capitol Avenue. These members have donated plantings and their time to maintain these areas for the enjoyment of all who live and visit our neighborhood.

Members of the Association have attended the planning sessions and have volunteered to work with the Sacramento Tree Foundation to monitor the health of the trees in the Capitol Mansions district.

Members of the Association regularly attend the quarterly Neighborhood Alliance meetings of representatives from many midtown neighborhood associations. The purpose of this group is to share information, discuss City projects and proposals that affect the Central City, and to offer support to other neighborhoods who share mutual concerns.
