In 2016, we started as a small group of neighbors, concerned about the direction alley development was taking in Sacramento, particularly in the 2200 block of Capitol Avenue. We began by meeting and expressing our concerns to the developer, then to the City's Preservation Commission, the Planning Commission and later, to the City Council.
While we eventually resolved our concerns about the proposed development, we realized there was tremendous potential if we moved forward to a more permanent status, enlarging our membership and continuing to work together to resolve neighborhood concerns.
In June of 2018, we were officially designated as 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Since then, we've expanded our mission to include neighborhood beautification, area safety, historic education and a focused activism directed to the future heath and improvement of our unique urban community.
The contributing resources in the Capitol Mansions Historic District reflect a group of larger, stately structures that were originally single-family residences. The district also includes two Landmark churches. Significant features and characteristics of the contributing resources include: raised basements that enhance the magnitude of these residential structures, features and materials consistent with Queen Anne and “Classic Box” styles of architecture, including highly developed front stair, porch, and trim details, largely constructed of wood, highly finished and painted.
To learn more about the specific parcels included, please see the document created by the Sacramento Register of Historic and Cultural Resources.
The Capitol Mansions Historic District is roughly bounded on the west side by 22nd Street, by Matsui and Liestal Alleys to the south and north, and by 26th Street to the east, with some outlying buildings also included.
